Is the Tradition of Giving Flowers Outdated?

By: Molly La Londe

Everyone deserves to feel appreciated around Valentine’s Day, but when it comes to flowers, should we break tradition and use them to symbolize our respect for one another? I believe the answer is yes. Flowers have been used as a sign of admiration since the 17th century when it was common for them to be sent in specific ways that meant different things. For example, in the Victorian age, bouquets were sent with extreme details, and even the way
the ribbon was tied played a role in their meaning. Flowers can be used as a kind gesture to let anyone know that you’re thinking about them. Everyone deserves to receive them at least once, whether it be to a friend, family member, or significant other. They come in a wide variety of colors, so it’s almost certain that there are some flowers for everyone to enjoy. Not only have they been proven to boost dopamine levels, but receiving flowers from someone you love can strengthen your bond with them and help relieve stress levels. Overall, receiving flowers is a simple way to brighten someone’s day and should be considered the next time you want to show appreciation for someone you love.
